Amateur Radio

ARRL — American Radio Relay League (opens in new tab)

National organization for amateur radio in the US. Licensing resources, club finder, emergency communication training (EC-001, EC-016), and advocacy. The starting point for anyone getting into ham radio.

ARES — Amateur Radio Emergency Service (opens in new tab)

ARRL's emergency communication program. Local ARES groups train for and respond to emergencies. Find your local group and get involved before you need them.

ARDC — Amateur Radio Digital Communications (opens in new tab)

Funds open-source amateur radio digital projects. Has provided significant funding to Meshtastic, AREDN, and other resilience-relevant projects.

Community Networks

Argentine organization developing open-source community network tools (LibreRouter, LibreMesh). Their firmware is used by community networks worldwide.

Freifunk (opens in new tab)

German open wireless network movement. Hundreds of local communities across Germany and internationally. Long-running model for volunteer-operated community mesh.

World's largest community network, based in Catalonia. Model for commons-based network governance at regional scale.

NYC Mesh (opens in new tab)

Community mesh network in New York City. Good urban model — active, well-documented, and growing.

Global organization promoting open internet. Supports community network development in underserved areas.

Emergency Preparedness

Federal emergency preparedness resources including communication planning guides.

Team Rubicon (opens in new tab)

Veteran-led disaster response organization. Uses sophisticated communication protocols in field operations. Good model for structured emergency communication.
